SOCOM beta keys all gone - for now!
Blog entry by Tom Bramwell

The SOCOM: Confrontation keys are all gone. Congratulations to everyone who got hold of one and sorry if you missed out.
Apologies particularly to those of you who missed out because accessing the website between 4 and 5pm was difficult. SOCOM was a very popular attraction and our amazing super-strong server struggled to deal with your enthusiasm.
I thought it would be useful for Mark Kennedy, Eurogamer's lead technical person or whatever, to explain why the hell we shouldn't sack him on the spot and set fire to him. "Imagine going to the pub, and instead of everybody waiting for the barman to get round to serving them, they just all shout out their orders," Mark told me.
"If they don't get their drink in one second, they just shout the order again and the barman really can't concentrate on what he's doing and everybody gets their drinks slower," he concluded, joblessly. So yes, we're sorry about that.
On the plus side, we're trying to convince Sony to give us some more, so with any luck there will be another chance soon. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the beta!

Resistance 2: EXCLUSIVE Co-op and Leviathan Details!

Buzz up!
We report on our hands-on time with Resistance 2's cooperative campaign, the towering beast known as the Leviathan, and more!
A Cast of Thousands: Resistance 2's Co-op Campaign Revealed!
The GamePro crew was fortunate enough to be the first ones granted access to the Resistance 2's Co-op, clashing with sheer overwhelming numbers of Chimera troops in the new online Cooperative campaign. Cooperative mode follows a different storyline than the Campaign, pitting eight players against hordes of rampaging Chimera. We picked up a controller to play a round of Cooperative, and it was an intense experience. Once the game began, it took mere seconds for our eight-man team to be overwhelmed by a crushing tidal wave of incoming Chimera troops.
Massive Starship Troopers-style enemy onslaughts are par for the course in Resistance 2's epic Cooperative mode: our group often battled 20 or 30 different Chimera at a time, with reinforcements constantly streaming in. We also encountered a tough boss creature, and it took the combined firepower of all eight players to finally bring the uber-beast crashing to its knees. Our reward was a collectible artifact that will unlock new equipment, both cosmetic and functional, in the final game.

The firepower of your friends during co-op will aid in wiping out Resistance 2's slew of new enemies, including The Grim, a new hideous breed of Chimera that infests the streets of Chicago.

You'll have to dive into both the Competitive and Cooperative online multiplayer modes in Resistance 2 to unlock all the extra content in the game, including rewards and equipment.
Massive numbers are also a major highlight of Resistance 2's new online Competitive mode, which drops two armies of players into a sprawling war zone. Online, the norm is 60-player battles -- nearly twice the players of most online shooters. But Insomniac is dead-set on eliminating the chaos and confusion that would plague a super-sized team deathmatch game, so they've implemented some safeguards to keep 60-player battles sane. Both teams are comprised of small squads that individually complete objectives for the team's greater good.
From a distance, the effect is seamless: a fluid 60-player battle fought between two enormous armies. But on the front lines, our squad was constantly focused on completing a stream of lightning-fast objectives, whether storming a fortified base or fighting off an enemy raid. We always knew exactly what to do and where to go with the help of incoming radio messages and other helpful intel.
After playing everything Resistance 2 has to offer, we were most struck by its sheer size and scope. Between the gameplay-rich Campaign, Cooperative, and Competitive modes, Resistance 2 packs in enough variety to entice almost any breed of shooter fan. The battle begins this November.

SOCOM beta crumbles under demand

SOCOM beta crumbles under demand

Sony apologise

Sony Computer Entertainment America have this weekend publicly apologised for the issues gamers have experienced attempting to participate in the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation public beta.

Frequent load issues, crashes, disconnections and more have become a problem because of high demand, with Sony's Seth Luisi stating that his team hope to have the beta up to speed by the end of the week.
"Due to overwhelming demand for the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Public Beta, we are experiencing load related issues," he admitted.
"These issues are causing abnormal latency, disconnects, long load times, login errors and community features such as clans and stats not functioning correctly (or at all). We are doing everything we can to resolve these issues as quickly as possible and you should see some improvements progressively over the next couple of days. However, we do not expect to have the issues completely resolved until close to the end of next week."
